Unfortunately, these myths put people off – which means they miss out on the benefits of car remapping. To clear things up, let’s go through five of the most common remapping myths and why they’re not worth your time.
First up, there’s the question of which cars need remapping. Because remapping improves performance, some people think it’s only for older cars – to make up for a drop in performance over the years.
However, that’s simply not true. Remapping a car’s engine control unit (ECU) adjusts limits to the engine’s performance, which are there from the very start of its lifespan. It makes no difference whether the car is new, old or somewhere in-between.
If anything, remapping a brand-new car is more exciting, because it means improving the car without any other age-related issues affecting its performance.
Whenever anyone is tinkering with your car, you might be worried that something could be damaged. Remapping is no exception, but it’s no different to any other work on your car – and the same advice applies.
Work should only be carried out by a trained professional. If this is the case, you have nothing to worry about. Be sure to check a company’s online reviews to make sure they’re trustworthy before letting them work on your car – as you should with any other repairs or improvements to your vehicle.
It’s widely believed that remapping will void your car’s warranty, whatever the circumstances. However, that’s not true in many cases.
Remapping will not void your warranty if it’s approved by a manufacturer or dealership. There are also some changes that can be reversed, so you can undo them if needed to keep your warranty intact.
Obviously, this is only a concern for newer vehicles, with most warranties lasting between 3-5 years. However, if you have any concern, it’s best to talk to a remapping professional before dismissing the idea completely.
One of the most common misconceptions about remapping is that it somehow makes fuel economy worse. Quite the opposite, in fact. Remapping can improve your car’s fuel efficiency – and you’ll notice that if you continue to drive it the same way.
Of course, lots of people change the way they drive after a remap, to enjoy their car’s increased power and responsiveness. Changing your driving style can result in higher fuel consumption, despite the increased efficiency from the remap.
Last but not least is the cost. Like any investment, there are always going to be people who think something is too expensive or not worth the price. You’ll find that those people say the same thing about lots of different purchases too.
But if you really care about your car’s performance, remapping is not expensive at all. Considering what you’ve paid for your car, it’s a small price to pay to improve how well it drives. On top of that, you could recoup some of that cost from the improved fuel-efficiency.
All too often, drivers are put off a remap because of misinformation and myths – meaning they miss out on a better driving experience. You don’t have to be one of them.
